"How did the music sound around 700 years B.C. and even earlier? 🎶
The diaulos was an ancient Greece wind instrument composed of two pipes (aulos), which were played similar to an oboe. It is basically two flutes put together. The two pipes were connected at their base and often of different lengths.
The "diaulos" with its rich, intensely sentimental, rhythmical and penetrating sound was capable of accompanying choruses consisting of tens of men all on its own.
There is a meaning also in the myth of the ancients, which tells how Athene invented the flute and then threw it away. It was not a bad idea of theirs, that the Goddess disliked the instrument because it made the face ugly; but with still more reason may we say that she rejected it because the acquirement of flute-playing contributes nothing to the mind, since to Athene we ascribe both knowledge and art.
I borrowed this fascinating instruments from Tristan Schulze and they were made by Musical Instruments Antplat"
